Two truths stand out at any given time:
11. The reality of where you are
2. The place where you want to be
Where you are
Most likely, at the beginning of every year you set goals, make plans, and/or self-dictate resolutions you intend to achieve in the new year. However, US News estimates 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail!
Does this describe you somehow? There are no easy solutions to remedy this however, there are real strategies to create massive achievement in 2019.
Where you want to be
I call the ability towards hyper-achievement: CLOSING THE GAP – Moving from where you are to where you want to be.
First – Identify Your Current Position
I was recently having a conversation with one of my clients. He was asking advice on a personal matter in his life and the first question I asked him was, do you want me to give you a politically correct answer, or would you rather me to be brutally honest with you?
(This was a situation that required a reality check because he wasn’t seeing the harmful, repeating patterns in his behavior.)
You need to be brutally honest with yourself. If possible, get an objective opinion from a trusted source.
Knowing where you’re at establishes a baseline for future growth.
Second –Get Clear About What You Want
You can’t hit a target you can’t see! Most people I speak with spend very little time getting clear (precise) about what they really want. Once you know where you currently are, start thinking about what you want exactly – where you want to be.
Third – Create the Plan
By knowing your starting position and your destination, you’ve identified the GAP. Now comes the planning phase. Charting the course to where you want to go.
You may need help doing this if you’ve had poor past experiences with creating a step-by-step process that’s simple and easy to launch.
Fourth – Implementation
Implementation requires first overcoming inertia. You need to make the process easy enough to start but increasing in difficulty as you develop momentum. It’s like lifting weights to gain muscle and strength, you need to provide progressive resistance.
Identify momentum killers and create strategies to minimize them. Most of us experience setbacks, however, making a plan ahead of time to deal with these events can get us back on track fast.
Fifth – Accountability
We all have areas of strength and weaknesses. We might have great discipline in some areas but are poorly disciplined in others. Knowing ourselves (See step 1) is where we start.
Getting a Consultant/Coach/Mentor/Accountability Partner can help.
I see highly educated, financially successful adults hiring trainers – most of whom are younger, less experienced in life and are typically less financially successful. Why? Because the trainer possesses specialized knowledge and specific skills that these people need to jump-start their health goals.
Sixth – Belief
Whether you believe you can or believe you can’t, you’re right!
Zig Ziglar (famous motivational speaker) used the term “stinking thinking” to describe a mindset that plagues many. Moving from unbelief towards belief moves the needle and begins the process of achievement.
Often times, the Consultants/Coaches we hire can empower us with a sense of belief we haven’t possessed in the past.
Seventh – Commitment
This is the key ingredient! “Interested people do what’s convenient while committed people do what it takes.” It’s time to COMMIT!
