When I decided to write Shore Up!, I had a goal to help law firms solve their staffing challenges, whether they worked with my company, Regents Remote Services, or not.
I realized that the best way to help wasn’t through sales pitches or competitive comparisons. It was through education. And what better way to educate than writing a book?
Here’s why writing Shore Up! has been one of the best business decisions I’ve ever made.
The Problem Most Law Firms Don’t Know They Have
After years of running Whittel & Melton, I continued to experience and observe the same patterns:
- Law firms were struggling with staffing.
- Good lawyers were spending too much time on tasks instead of practicing law.
- Partners were frustrated because they couldn’t find reliable support staff locally.
The common thread with these law firms is that they never considered nearshoring as a solution.

They didn’t know what they didn’t know.
They’d heard of offshoring and sending work to the other side of the world with massive time zone differences and communication barriers.
But nearshoring to Mexico? Working with bilingual professionals in similar time zones who understand U.S. business culture? That wasn’t on their radar.

Education Creates the Market
I quickly realized that before law firms could use nearshoring or become Regents clients, they needed to understand what nearshoring is and why it works.
They needed to see the difference between nearshoring and traditional offshoring, how to interview remote candidates and onboard virtual team members, and manage staff across borders. They needed to believe it was possible.
That’s when I decided to write Shore Up!, a complete toolkit that law firms looking to build nearshore teams can use.
Putting the Spotlight on Nearshoring
The book doesn’t just help law firms that hire Regents; it also benefits those that don’t.
In my book, I include:
- Interview techniques that work for any remote hiring.
- Onboarding processes that improve any virtual team.
- Management strategies that make any nearshore relationship successful.
It might seem crazy to give it away, but I believe in the power of nearshoring so much.
Expanding the Entire Market
When law firms succeed with nearshoring, regardless of who they hire, it proves the concept works.
It shows other law firms that this isn’t some risky experiment. It’s a legitimate business strategy that helps practices grow and lawyers focus on practicing law.
Every success story creates another advocate for nearshoring.
Every law firm that builds a successful remote team becomes a case study for the next firm considering the same move.
I’m not just trying to attract new clients (although that’s a primary driver), I’m trying to expand the entire market of law firms that understand why nearshoring makes sense.
It Shows How Much I Believe in This
Writing a book isn’t something you do casually or as a quick marketing stunt. Books have staying power. A blog post gets buried in the search results and on your website. A social media post disappears from the feed. But books stick around. They’re a tool you can touch, reference, and recommend. The authority you build through a book compounds over time. Each copy and mention reinforces your reputation.
When law firm owners see that I wrote an entire book about nearshoring, complete with step-by-step processes, interview scripts, and management strategies, it demonstrates something important. It shows I believe in this solution so much that I’m willing to invest significant time and effort to help them succeed with it. Even if they never hire me. That level of commitment means something in an industry built on relationships and trust.
Now, I’m not saying writing a book was easy. It took a lot of hard work, discipline, time, and pushing through when I’d rather be doing something else. But writing this book is a source of pride for me. And, the same can be said for you. If you’re thinking about writing a book, start simple. Document one solution you’ve perfected. Share one strategy that’s transformed your practice or business. You don’t need to write War and Peace. You need to write about the expertise that could help others succeed. The authority and trust you build from it will compound for years to come.
