COVID-19 has most of us sitting at home with more than usual time on our hands. Rather than binge-watching NETFLIX, why not redeem this time to help you grow your law firm? While we can do little about the coronavirus other than social distancing, we can be proactive about our businesses. This is a great time to finally write that book you’ve been meaning to but never found the time to before. Phones aren’t ringing off the hook. You aren’t being interrupted by office fires, upcoming trials or mediations, etc. Redeeming this time to grow your business just makes sense.
Why a book? Education based marketing allows you to market yourself and your law firm in a powerful way. That’s why I have always encouraged lawyers to write a book, or two- geared towards educating potential clients and providing them with helpful and relevant information. Frankly, it was one of my most successful marketing tactics in both my law firms, and I have seen it work well for attorneys all across the country. The reason is simple- most people perceive someone who has written a book, as being an expert in their field. You want your potential clients to see you as an expert attorney — someone who really understands personal injury cases, or trucking cases, domestic cases or motorcycle cases, etc.

A book is a great differentiator — and can really set you apart from your competition. Books also can be given out and shared- read and re-read. You can offer a digital version as a lead magnet online through your website and in social media blasts. You can provide every client who signs up with your firm multiple copies to share with their friends and family, etc. You can create television or radio infomercials and offer the book free upon request. You can give copies to Referral sources like doctors offices, chiropractors, etc. You can pass them out at community events. The marketing possibilities are endless and the beauty of this soft -sell strategy is that you are doing the public a service, and sharing really good and helpful content!

You may want to tackle writing a book from scratch- and that’s wonderful if you have the time and inclination. However, you can also use someone like the talented Michael DeLon, with Paperback Expert to interview you and assist you in the writing and publication process (he has written a great article in this month’s Insider).
