While pivoting in the startup world means to shift to a new strategy, many believe it entails drastically changing your whole business. The truth is that this is not always the case. Often a business has only one or two major problems that need to be addressed, and the solution requires just a few critical changes.
We have seen this firsthand during the Coronavirus crisis. Here at PILMMA, we made several pivots that, in turn, helped many law firms make their own pivots. For example, PILMMA had initially planned for the Law Firm Growth Super Summit for June in New Orleans. But as soon as the Coronavirus Outbreak began to hit, we ceased all marketing for the Summit, pivoted to creating a website full of helpful articles, and started hosting Coronavirus Law Firm Survival Webinars to help lawyers deal with the fall out from COVID-19.

As part of PILMMA’s pivot, we also started conducting weekly Zoom meetings with each of our 5 Masterminds. These weekly meetings were invaluable as each of our Mastermind members shared what they were doing to pivot their marketing and operations during the crisis. These meetings were like each member having their own active and engaged Board of Advisors. Together, they tackled issues such as 1) Going Remote, 2) Managing Remote Employees, 3) Marketing tactics and negotiating media buys to get more bang for their advertising bucks, 4) Creating PSA’s and a more active Social Media Presence, 5) Exploring New Practice Areas, such as Business Interruption Claims, Debtor-Creditor Law, and Bankruptcy, 6) Community Involvement Ideas like Giving Away Masks and Bottles of Sanitizer, and 7) PPP SBA Loans and 8) Reopening Procedures during Covid-19.

Although PILMMA’s Mastermind groups usually only meet in person every four months, we were able to conduct six straight weeks of virtual meetings with each respective Mastermind group. These gatherings gave all the members valuable insights and strategies they could begin to implement within their own firms! PILMMA Pivoted, as did our Mastermind Members, and their collaborative efforts further propelled their respective firms forward, even during COVID-19. There really is no substitute for spending intentional time with other like-minded and successful law firm owners- for support, motivation, clarity, and to jump-start one’s own law firm marketing and management with fresh ideas and insights! (If you haven’t explored upgrading your membership to Mastermind, call Darlene at 1-800-497-1890 to set up an appointment today to see if this program will be a good fit for you)
I’ve always said that the Mastermind Effect is enormous when you are actively trying to grow your own law firm. It’s better to learn the shortcuts from other’s victories and mistakes, rather than spending unnecessary time learning through trial and error. It’s also much less expensive!
I’d also encourage you to take advantage of another significant pivot: The new and improved Gold Membership. Even if you’ve been a PILMMA Gold member for years, we have revamped and boosted this program to include a host of new training modules and videos that I’ve personally put together to help you jump-start your firm’s growth with a step by step blueprint, as well as some exciting new Monthly Roundtables for your staff and new Intake Training with Chris Mullins. But as you’ve heard me say so many times, change doesn’t happen until you take action! Pivoting during a crisis takes intentional thought and then implementation of your action plan. Now is the time to work on your business, particularly when we are home, and most firms remain on remote or partial remote status. Committing just 2-5 hours a day can yield tremendous results!
Have you pivoted your law firm during the Coronavirus? While we cannot control the virus, we can control what we do during this time: to survive and thrive both now and when this crisis subsides. It is critical that you rethink how you will move your law firm forward; by pivoting in the right direction for your firm’s future success. ◆
